It is the site of the 17th century home of Miles Cary, Jr., Clerk of Court for many years and four succeeding generations of Carys who also held that office. According to tradition, the county court in its early years was held beneath a giant hackberry tree (of the elm tree family) on this site. The home survived until 1865. The ancient tree, whose symbol appears on the City seal, died. It was replaced and stands today with the grave sites of several family members beneath it.
